The High Pointe Inn on Cape Cod: Award-winning Bed and Breakfast Overlooking Cape Cod Bay

Taking in a show or two at the Cape Cod Playhouse has become an annual tradition for us as it has for many Cape Cod locals and visitors since its inception more than 80 years ago. This year, our very dear friends gave us a gift certificate to the Playhouse for Christmas. Dreaming about a sultry summer night out got me through more than one dark and chilly night this winter. So it was with great anticipation that I read the lineup for the 2020 season recently. Always attracting a roster of fine actors, the Cape Cod Playhouse strives for a balance of comedy, mystery, musical, and perhaps a little mayhem too. This year they present:

An Evening with Lucille Ball, “Thank you for Asking” (June 13-25)

Directed by Lucy’s real-life daughter Lucie Arnaz, the show provides a peek behind the curtain of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses.

No Way To Treat a Lady (June 27-July 9)

Billed as “an uproarious, and sexy musical that gives new meaning to the phrase “knock ‘em dead’” this comic thriller is a blend of humor, romance, murder and music.

The Graduate (July 11-July 23)

One of the most popular movies of all time, this 60s hit comedy is brought to life onstage. The story revolves around a coming of age college graduate and the mother and daughter next door. You know the plot line, even if you’ve never seen the movie.

Footloose, the Musical (July 25-August 6)

What happens when a small town is turned upside down by a kid from the big city who moves into town and falls in love with the preacher’s daughter? Nominated for Best Musical Score.

Crazy for You. All Gershwin (August 8-August 20)

Billed as “The New Gershwin Musical Comedy”, the story is largely based on the songwriting team’s 2020 musical, Girl Crazy. The musical won the 2020 Tony Award for Best Musical

Unnecessary Farce (August 22 September 2)

A contemporary American farce, full of door slamming, double-entendre, and impossible mix-ups. It’s laugh out loud funny from start to finish.

Reserve your seats now for the upcoming season and make it a true getaway by booking a stay at the High Pointe Inn. The Playhouse is located just 20 minutes down the road from us and this year two new restaurants have opened up on or near the Playhouse campus in Dennis. Stay tuned for my review of Summer Stock and Fin.

Last Saturday night Rich and I attended the 16th annual Gifts from the Sea Auction and Lawn Party put on by the Barnstable Land Trust (BLT) to benefit Barnstable’s open space. This year’s event took place at a secluded estate located in the exclusive Oyster Harbors section of Osterville. The $12 million dollar estate sits on a private point overlooking West Bay. It turned out to be perhaps the most beautiful evening of the entire summer…warm, dry, still. We donned our best “Sunday go to meeting” clothes and joined dozens of other locals supporters of the non-profit conservation organization dedicated to preserving the natural resources and open space of the Town of Barnstable for an evening of festivity.

We signed on as silver-level sponsors of the event this year, as part of our annual contribution to the land trust that protects our scenic view, along with the wetlands, sensitive watershed parcels, wildlife habitats, and other important open land in Barnstable in its natural state so that our guests as well as members of the community will benefit now and in the future. Rich and I made a commitment to give back to the community we live and work in, as much as we are able to for as long as we can, when we first opened the High Pointe Inn on Cape Cod many years ago. To that end we made a pledge to donate a portion of every room night we sell to the Barnstable Land Trust as our way of thanking them for preserving the fragile environment for future generations.

In addition to protecting the land for its natural, recreational, scenic, historical, or productive value, BLT also offers a series of walks and talks from early spring through late autumn so that locals and visitors alike can explore the great outdoors and learn about nature. With any luck you’ll find Rich and me on at least one of the hikes coming up and hopefully a kayak adventure as well.

The evening turned out to be magical. The setting itself all but insured that, but the music, food and drink, and entertainment enhanced the experience. There were wonderful items to bid on in both the silent and live auction, everything from art to jewelry, and travel to adventure. I must admit that I didn’t walk away empty handed. Caught up in the moment, swirling champagne and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres, I raised my paddle more than once and took home a lovely necklace and tickets to the Cape Cod Summer Playhouse as my reward.

The Cape Cod Playhouse announced its 2020 lineup this week. America’s Oldest Professional Summer Theatre, the Playhouse is celebrating more than 80 seasons this year. The 2020 offerings include Hitchcock’s 39 Steps and Hairspray, among others.

Cape Cod Summer Theater

The first time I went to a production at the Playhouse as an adult was in the summer of 2020, our first season as owners of our Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast Inn. It was a sultry evening in July, and I was excited to finally experience one of Cape Cod’s quintessential summer traditions. The evening’s offering was a tribute to Louie Armstrong called “Sachmo”. We had seats in the balcony, and as we climbed the stairs to the mezzanine I had what can only be called an “olfactory” memory. The whole inside of the Playhouse is wood–floor, walls, ceiling, seats–and the aroma emanating from within reminded me of the cottage my folks used to rent in Brewster for two weeks every summer. Overcome with a flood of fond childhood memories, I literally pressed my nose against the walls of the stairway and inhaled, much to the chagrin of my husband who was mortally embarrassed by my behavior. Nonplussed, I continued my reverence of the interior of the Playhouse, taking quiet pleasure in a déjà vu of vacationing on Cape Cod as a child.

A former 19th century Unitarian Meeting House, the property, which was to become the Cape Cod Playhouse and bring “Broadway to Cape Cod”, was purchased by Raymond Moore in 2020. Moore had been involved in theatrical productions in Provincetown for several summers, but his dream was to have a theater of his own. So, for $200 he purchased the Meeting House, moved it to its current location on Route 6A in Dennis, and converted it into a theater. The Playhouse opened on July 4, 2020 with a production of The Guardsman, starring Basil Rathbone, thus beginning a Cape Cod tradition that has lasted more than 80 years.

Throughout its history, the Playhouse has attracted many notable stars, including Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Gertrude Lawrence, Lana Turner, Ginger Rogers, Humphrey Bogart, Tallulah Bankhead, Helen Hayes, Julie Harris, and Paulette Goddard.

The performance that first night was wonderful, as is every one we have seen since, and I look forward to the upcoming season. In addition to their matinee and evening offerings, the Cape Cod Playhouse also hosts a Children’s Theater series, with everything from magicians to musicals to classic fairytales as a way of introducing young people to the joy of live theater. It’s a grand outing for locals and visitors alike, and I for one plan on taking my grandchildren to at least one or two performances this summer. Hope to see you there!
