The High Pointe Inn on Cape Cod: Award-winning Bed and Breakfast Overlooking Cape Cod Bay

It was a dark and stormy night…literally. We started out in a downpour of historic proportions and periodically throughout the evening the lightening threatened to put a serious damper on our dining adventure. But nothing could dampen our enthusiasm for a world class dining experience at the newly opened Fin in Dennis MA.

Now we have had some wonderful meals on Cape Cod, blessed as we are with a plethora of fine dining establishments, and a full complement of seafood offerings that range from the omnipresent clam shack to chef-owned bistros of some renown. But to say that our meal at Fin last night is hands down the most delectable in our 7+ year tenure here on Cape Cod barely begins to do it justice.

We started with an amusé served by our very talented waiter, Stephen, whom we have encountered before in this food-friendly peninsula. A perfectly poached morsel of succulent lobster bathed in chive cream and served on a lotus chip was as beautiful to look at as it was to taste. It was the perfect bite. Accompanied by a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, my appetite was sufficiently whetted for the courses yet to come.

Rich and I both opted for the house-made oyster chowder to start. Artfully served in simple white bowls, the creamy chowder was filled with sweet Dennis oysters from an oyster grant owned by the chef‘s husband, and were nicely balanced by smoky bacon, leeks and white truffle oil. Rich and satisfying, it was clear that this was no ordinary chowder.

For the entrée, again Rich and I chose the same dish. This time we went with the pan-seared day boat sea scallops that were served with oyster mushrooms, asparagus, pancetta, gaufrettes, and a chive béarnaise. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and the lemony béarnaise played nicely with the smoky pancetta. The gaufrettes were crisp and salty and offered a playful counterpoint to the richness of the dish.

Chef Martha Kane, formerly the executive chef at the Brewster Fish House, opened Fin earlier this year with her husband. Housed in a two-story antique home on Route 6A in Dennis, MA, the ambiance of the restaurant exudes casual comfort. Original wide pine flooring, large light-filled windows and whimsical art pieces in both the upstairs and downstairs dining rooms set the mood for an intimate dining experience.

We completed our meal with handcrafted desserts. Rich chose banana fritters with coconut ice cream and caramel sauce, and while I was tempted by the strawberry and rhubarb tart served with ginger ice cream, I was ultimately swayed by a rich chocolate and coffee mousse confection and have no regrets.

Fin is open for dinner nightly, except Sunday. Given its proximity to the Cape Cod Playhouse, I predict reservations will be tough to come by in the season. So plan ahead and bring a discerning palate. You won’t be disappointed.

Taking in a show or two at the Cape Cod Playhouse has become an annual tradition for us as it has for many Cape Cod locals and visitors since its inception more than 80 years ago. This year, our very dear friends gave us a gift certificate to the Playhouse for Christmas. Dreaming about a sultry summer night out got me through more than one dark and chilly night this winter. So it was with great anticipation that I read the lineup for the 2020 season recently. Always attracting a roster of fine actors, the Cape Cod Playhouse strives for a balance of comedy, mystery, musical, and perhaps a little mayhem too. This year they present:

An Evening with Lucille Ball, “Thank you for Asking” (June 13-25)

Directed by Lucy’s real-life daughter Lucie Arnaz, the show provides a peek behind the curtain of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses.

No Way To Treat a Lady (June 27-July 9)

Billed as “an uproarious, and sexy musical that gives new meaning to the phrase “knock ‘em dead’” this comic thriller is a blend of humor, romance, murder and music.

The Graduate (July 11-July 23)

One of the most popular movies of all time, this 60s hit comedy is brought to life onstage. The story revolves around a coming of age college graduate and the mother and daughter next door. You know the plot line, even if you’ve never seen the movie.

Footloose, the Musical (July 25-August 6)

What happens when a small town is turned upside down by a kid from the big city who moves into town and falls in love with the preacher’s daughter? Nominated for Best Musical Score.

Crazy for You. All Gershwin (August 8-August 20)

Billed as “The New Gershwin Musical Comedy”, the story is largely based on the songwriting team’s 2020 musical, Girl Crazy. The musical won the 2020 Tony Award for Best Musical

Unnecessary Farce (August 22 September 2)

A contemporary American farce, full of door slamming, double-entendre, and impossible mix-ups. It’s laugh out loud funny from start to finish.

Reserve your seats now for the upcoming season and make it a true getaway by booking a stay at the High Pointe Inn. The Playhouse is located just 20 minutes down the road from us and this year two new restaurants have opened up on or near the Playhouse campus in Dennis. Stay tuned for my review of Summer Stock and Fin.

Need an excuse to get out of the kitchen next week and come to Cape Cod? Set your sights on any of the nearly 50 restaurants across Cape Cod that will be celebrating Cape Cod Restaurant Week starting Monday, May 16 and running through Sunday, May 22, 2020. Operating twice annually since the Fall of 2020, Restaurant Week is a great way to sample some of Cape Cod’s finest restaurants for a fraction of the price. Featuring a 3- or 4-course prix fixe menu priced at $25 – $35 per person depending on the restaurant, you could easily discover a new favorite, or return to a much-loved venue from previous seasons. Rich and I always try 3-4 “new to us” restaurants during this bi-annual event so that we can recommend new and different places for our Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast guests to try.

Dana’s Kitchen in Falmouth is the kind of place you dream about. Set along a quiet stretch of Palmer Avenue just north of the center of town, we stumbled upon this tiny breakfast and lunch spot on one of our famous “get in the car and go” days.  It quickly became this Cape Cod innkeeper’s favorite lunch spot.

Tucked in among the trees, Dana’s Kitchen and its gracious proprietors, Art and Dana Tillman, welcome you as soon as you open the door. Behind the counter you’ll find Art, Dana’s husband and business partner. Dana herself is scurrying between the sandwich prep area and the enormous ovens where she creates her mouth-watering breads, scones, muffins, cookies, and pies. Greeted with a big smile and a kind word by these two graduates of Hyde Park’s Culinary Institute of America, you are immediately handed the menu of daily specials that you just know will be prepared with the freshest ingredients in a simple yet creative way.

Once the site of the Peachtree Farms restaurant, the cozy “Kitchen”, as it is known to locals, strives for a casual atmosphere and a “homey” feel. In the winter, you are warmed by the gas fireplace and the tantalizing aromas wafting from the kitchen. In the summer you have a choice of dining inside or outside on the deck surrounded by perennial gardens, shade trees and blooming flower boxes. A large flat screen TV on the wall is tuned to the cooking channel, and wireless internet is available so that folks feel free to linger over a cup of coffee and a pastry. It is, in essence, a place where comfort is king and relaxation reigns supreme. Exactly the kind of place a weary innkeeper wants to retreat to in the middle of the day to recharge the batteries.

The lunch menu is a classic mix of soups, salads, and sandwiches, but each item is given its own signature styling by Art and Dana that keep locals coming back time and again for their favorites. Rich’s new favorite is the smoked Scotch salmon on toasted marble rye with cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions and capers. It’s melt in your mouth wonderful and, judging by the expression on my husband’s face each time he orders it, just shy of culinary nirvana. I am a fan of the cranberry walnut chicken salad on Dana’s homemade wheat bread. The portions are so large, a half of a sandwich is all I can eat, especially if I’ve had a cup of one of their delicious homemade soups to start. On Fridays, they serve their haddock chowder, a yummy concoction made with chunks of meaty haddock and diced potatoes in a silky cream base. But get there early if you want to try it, because people start streaming in around 11:30 on Fridays.

In addition to their breakfast and lunch offerings, Art and Dana offer take-out and business lunches along with catering for private functions. Located at 881 Palmer Avenue in Falmouth, MA, Dana’s Kitchen is open daily from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM; closed on Tuesday. Call ahead for take-out. 508-540-7900.

Being fulltime Cape Cod residents and innkeepers, we try to keep abreast of all things local. But sometimes new finds come in strange ways. To wit, while at a doctor’s appointment recently the chitchat turned to local restaurants with a summer vibe. As we idled past the usual fare… Baxter’s Boathouse, the Hyannis Yacht Club, Tugboats…a new name piqued my curiosity: The Islander at Crosby Boat Yard. Not being familiar with this restaurant or its location, naturally we had to give it a whirl at the first possible opportunity, which happened to be the day after my doctor’s appointment. We don’t like to let any grass grow under our feet, as the saying goes.

Armed with my trusty atlas, we navigated our way over to Osterville and pulled into Crosby’s. It was a warm and humid day, not full of this year’s ubiquitous sunshine, but not raining either. Born at the former Keeper’s location, the Islander turned out to be quite a find. The atmosphere and menu can best be described as Florida Keys meets Caribbean spice. Small, but colorful, the dining tables are arranged to take best advantage of the view out to the boats at the marina, and in the evening the setting sun. A large bar area dominates the cozy dining room, with an interesting array of summer drinks, especially martinis. And as Rich experienced, the pour is generous.

For lunch, I chose a pulled pork salad topped with a mango chutney over spring mix greens. Served with a side of barbeque sauce, the pork was moist and succulent and balanced perfectly with the bright flavor of the mango. Rich ordered the Cubaño, a combination of pulled pork, ham, sweet and spicy pickles, and mustard on grilled ciabatta with a most excellent side of crispy French fries. Perhaps the best lunch we have had all season, the Islander quickly rose to a new favorite haunt for those days when we need to escape the Inn and have a mini-vacation at lunch.

We liked the place so much, in fact, that we made a reservation for dinner the following evening. We enjoyed watching the sun set over the harbor from our table for two at the window tucked in the corner at the far end of the bar. A much different vibe infuses the Island at night. Filled with summer folk, a bevy of girls out for a night on the town, and a few couples at the bar, the noise factor was significantly higher, but our waitress was accommodating and the food just as good as we had experienced at lunch. We both chose the smoked pulled pork over housemade gnocchi with carmelized onions, BBQ jus and goat cheese. Again, the pork was the star of the dish. We were tempted to try one of the amazing sounding starters, but opted for a bowl of clam chowder and a “Hail Caesar” salad with housemade dressing instead. Both good choices, I especially liked the whimsy of the pineapple croutons in the salad, and Rich declared the chowder A-1, although the rendition he had at lunch was spicier.

A sister property to the Island Merchant on Main Street in Hyannis, the Islander is a seasonal restaurant, open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner through mid-October. Reservations are highly recommended for dinner and gladly accepted for parties of any size.

Elegant Dining on Cape Cod

Eat to live or live to eat? Ahh, the perennial question. Rich and I consider ourselves “professional eaters” and feel that we have a personal obligation to our guests to sample as many Cape Cod dining options as we can so that we can make the appropriate restaurant recommendation for our guests according to their preferences. Whether you are looking for a local seafood place, a restaurant with a view of the water, a fine dining establishment, or a place with casual atmosphere and an eclectic menu, the sheer variety of restaurant choices on Cape Cod is endless. Many of these restaurants are located within a 5 to 15 minute drive of our bed and breakfast inn, but a few are a bit further afield.

Here for your reference is a brief summary of some of our personal favorite restaurants, along with some our guests have tried and recommended to us. We hope this will help you choose the perfect setting for your Cape Cod dining adventures.

The restaurants are grouped according to style (casual to elegant) with notes regarding whether reservations are required, recommended, or unavailable, along with location, phone number, and hours of operation. A few restaurants on the list are only open seasonally and we have noted them as such. Read the rest of this entry »

One night a few weeks ago Rich and I were invited to vacate our Cape Cod Inn for the evening and try a new restaurant with some innkeeper friends of ours. Every year we try to sample two or three new Cape Cod restaurants so that we can offer an honest opinion when our guests ask for dining recommendations. La Cucina Sul Mare had been on my wish list for a while, so when friends suggested a night out, we spirited them towards this tiny storefront on Main Street in Falmouth.

While they do not take reservations, I called in advance and was assured that on a Tuesday night in February the four of us we sure to get a table. And what a table. When we arrived we were escorted to a table for four tucked into the bay window that overlooked the main thoroughfare. Our server was incredible, available without being pushy, and both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu. We each ordered a glass of wine from an extensive wine list to enjoy as we perused the menu.

Once the specials had been described and our orders placed, the server returned with a basket of warm, crusty bread accompanied by a rich olive oil for dipping. Though not crowded the evening that we were there, I imagine that due to its Main Street location and small size, a wait for a table may be necessary during the height of summer.

Dining at La Cucina Sul Mare is what I imagine dining in Italy must be like. The setting is warm and intimate, the service unhurried, and the atmosphere cozy and comforting. I ordered the osso buco, my all-time favorite, and was treated to the most divine dish of tender meat in a rich braise of root vegetables with a side of creamy risotto. It was heavenly, and more than enough to bring home for the next day’s lunch. They specialize in northern Italian and Mediterranean cuisines offering fresh pasta, pollo, vitello, carne, and pesce dishes including classic lasagna al forno, braised lamb shanks, lobster fra diavolo over liguine, zuppa de pesce, rigotoni a la vodka, chicken Parmesan and veal piccata.

We will be highly recommending La Cucina Sul Mare to our guests. Prices are reasonable and the food is exquisite. The restaurant is open year-round for lunch (11:30am-2:00pm) and dinner (5:00-10:00pm) and reservations not accepted.
