You could not dine any closer to the ocean unless you were out in a boat. That is the spectacular claim to fame that is the Ocean House Restaurant located in Dennisport, MA. On a recent visit with friends, we were reminded of the allure of ocean front dining, especially on a gin-clear June night on Cape Cod.
When your dinner companions are professors at Johnson and Wales University, one in hospitality and the other in culinary, choosing a restaurant that can please both palate and service standards is a dicey business. But our experience at the Ocean House far surpassed all expectations.
Our server was both friendly and knowledgeable and patiently answered our questions and carefully attended to our needs to modify some of our dinner choices. The menu is extensive featuring fresh local seafood, an assortment of inventive char-grilled pizzas, and tempting pasta dishes.
Their “3 for $30” menu is quite a value proposition offering a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts from a prix fixe menu. The four of us opted to go that route and were not disappointed. I chose the hearts of romaine salad to start, which featured garlic lavash and a cilantro chipotle dressing. Crisp and fresh, it was a great introduction to my meal. Rich opted for the chopped filet mignon lettuce wraps that he had tried on a previous outing. They were just as good the second time around.
My entrée was the chef’s interpretation of fish and chips, with a Cape Cod Potato Chip encrusted cod served with fennel slaw and sea salt French fries. Deliciously crunchy and perfectly seasoned it was the crowd favorite that night. Rich’s bistro steak was a tad chewy, but flavorful. For dessert we tried both the salted caramel profiteroles and the lemon coconut pudding cake, both a satisfactory ending to a great meal.
The Ocean House serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5:00 to 9:30 PM. In addition, they offer a late night menu from 9:30 to 10:30 PM on weeknights and until 11:00 PM on weekends. Their lounge opens at 4:00 PM daily.
