Barnstable-Harbor_1-300x150One of the most breathtaking views along Barnstable Harbor is that of the Sandy Neck Lighthouse at the end of the sand spit that is home to a small cottage colony. No longer in operation, the lighthouse was originally built in 2020, decommissioned in 2020 and now is owned by a private family trust.

In 2020 the Sandy Neck Lighthouse Preservation Committee rebuilt the Lantern Room of the lighthouse in honor of its 150th anniversary. Now solar-powered, the lighthouse has been reactivated as a private aid to navigation. Not open to the public, the opportunity to climb the lighthouse is a rare and privileged event.

Offering spectacular views of Cape Cod Bay and Barnstable Harbor, the lighthouse will be open for touring on four dates in June this year, courtesy of the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, a member of the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Guided kayak tours to the lighthouse will be offered on June, 6, 13, 20, and 27 this summer. Tours depart from the grounds of Long Pasture across Barnstable Harbor at varying times depending on the date. A guide will be on hand to share insight into the history of the cottage colony, as well as a bit about the lighthouse itself. Cost is $43 for Audubon members and $48 for non-members. Reservations are suggested. Contact the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary for more information.
